Individual sensitivity to framing effects

چکیده
Surveys are sometimes viewed with suspicion when used to provide economic values, since they have been proved to be sensitive to framing effects. However, the extent to which those effects may vary between individuals has received little attention. Are some individuals less sensitive to framing effects than others ? How to detect them ? These are the questions addressed in this paper. We use the theory of social representation to assign to each individual a new variable that is proved to be a proxy for the individual’s sensitivity to framing effects. We examine two framing effects which are known to have a significant effect on valuation, namely, starting-point bias and willingness-to-pay and willingness-toaccept divergence. It is proved that the representation variable allows researchers to gather new and relevant information to limit the impact of framing effects.

A New Look at Framing Effects:
Levin, Schneider and Gaeth (1998) identified three distinct types of framing effects in the literature: attribute-framing effects, goal-framing effects, risky choice-framing effects. While most previous framing studies used between-subjects manipulations of frame, the present study used two sessions, spaced one week apart, to give each of 102 participants both framing conditions and all three t...
متن کاملAttitude Change in Competitive Framing Environments? Open/ClosedMindedness, Framing Effects, and Climate Change
Framing scholarship on policy issues has primarily focused on how competitive message environments alter framing effects or how individual differences moderate the impact of frames. This study combines both of these focal areas by examining how individual open/closed-mindedness moderates framing effects about climate change within competitive and noncompetitive framing contexts. Contrary to pre...
متن کاملFraming Bias in the Interpretation of Quality Improvement Data: Evidence From an Experiment
Background A growing body of public management literature sheds light on potential shortcomings to quality improvement (QI) and performance management efforts. These challenges stem from heuristics individuals use when interpreting data. Evidence from studies of citizens suggests that individuals’ evaluation of data is influenced by the linguistic framing or context of that information an...
متن کاملFraming effects and risk-sensitive decision making.
Prospect theory suggests that people are risk-averse when facing gains, but risk-prone when facing losses, a pattern known as the framing effect. Although framing effects have been widely demonstrated, few studies have investigated framing effects under conditions of need. Risk-sensitivity theory predicts that decision makers should prefer high-risk options in situations of high need, when lowe...
متن کاملIssue Importance as a Moderator of Framing Effects
Framing effects research addresses how frames in the news media affect cognitions, attitudes, and preferences. A growing amount of research is devoted to the question which individual and contextual variables can enhance, limit or obliterate framing effects. However, the fundamental question whether framing effects may vary depending on the particular issue at stake has not been addressed. Base...
